Water Damage Impacts Unity Village Tower but Not Awaken Whole Life Center

May 16, 2016

Employees at Unity Village relocated Awaken Whole Life Center within hours after extensive water damage at the historic Unity Tower.

UNITY VILLAGE, Mo.—Unity World Headquarters President and Chief Operating Officer Guy Swanson wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he arrived at Unity Village at 8:30 p.m. on Mothers’ Day (May 8).

A lightning strike disabled the water level monitoring system controlling the 100,000-gallon tank housed in the Unity Tower, causing some 5,000 gallons of water to cascade inside the 165-foot landmark.

“It was just a mess,” Swanson said. “There was water on all seven floors.”

A specialty cleaning crew started mopping up that evening.

The damage, however, was more than surface deep. Water had infiltrated walls and ceilings throughout the structure—posing a significant challenge for the staff of Awaken Whole Life Center, a full-service healing center that operates in the Tower.

“As a provider of health services, it’s imperative that our clients have a completely safe and hygienic environment,” Awaken operations manager Janet Stevenson said. “We couldn’t bring people into the Tower in this condition. At the same time, we had to be open to serve those who depend on us for treatment.”

On Sunday evening Stevenson and co-manager Sheri Alexander started reaching out to clients to reschedule services. They also began tackling the logistics of moving 16 practitioners to an alternate site in the nearby Administration Building.

“As the saying goes, it takes a village,” Stevenson said. “Our wonderful Unity Village employees pitched in on the spot to move offices, treatment tables, medical equipment, phones, and computers. They even installed signs to direct clients to temporary parking and entrances.”

Awaken’s May 9 evening yoga class met in the Administration Building. Full medical, chiropractic, massage, and spa services were available by Wednesday, May 11.

A.L. Huber Construction, who renovated the Tower in 2013, is performing the repairs. The project is expected to take eight to 12 weeks.

Awaken Whole Life Center will maintain regular hours Monday through Saturday in the Administration Building for the duration of construction. Information about Awaken services is available at awakenwholelifecenter.com.
