Inspirational magazine debuts in the birthplace of Confucius

UNITY VILLAGE, Mo. Daily Word, the inspirational magazine published by Unity since 1924, makes its Chinese-language debut this month in the Shangdong Province of China. The province includes the city of Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius and an important Chinese religious center.

“That this effort is proceeding in Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, which has been considered the religious center of China for over a thousand years, in an important message …” wrote Mr. Zhang Zhi Xin, the director of religious affairs for the City of Qufu, in an introduction that accompanies the first Chinese edition. “The content each month will speak clearly for itself with the intent to build bridges between Chinese traditional thought and the non-threatening teachings presented in the Daily Word.”

Daily Word has long been printed in seven languages and enjoyed by people in more than 125 countries. The move into China was the inspiration of Dan DeCarlo, a member of Unity of Del Rey Beach, Fla., and president and CEO of the Kongdan Foundation, an organization that focuses on building bridges between the U.S. and China through various modes of education. DeCarlo believes Daily Word and Unity are excellent fits for China.

“Religion is thought of in more inclusive terms there than in the United States. You can be a Buddhist, a Taoist and a Christian all at the same time,” said DeCarlo. “That connectedness to a universal spirit gives people more of a sense of divinity than people traditionally have in America.”

Messages in the China edition of Daily Word will be published both in Chinese and English. “The Chinese are very hungry to learn English,” said DeCarlo. “Anything they can get with English and Chinese in the same book is coveted.”

Daily Word is now printed in eight languages—Afrikaans, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.
