THE FUTURE OF CHRISTIANITY
BY BISHOP JOHN SHELBY SPONG
Unity is uniquely suited to lead the "Christian reformation" that is necessary for Christianity to survive, says former Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong.
In speaking to participants at Unity Institute's first Lyceum last November, Spong said Unity's unique gift to the evolution of Christianity—and the gift that changed his own life—is a redefinition of God and humanity's relationship to God.
"The job of Christianity is not to bring salvation from an external God to sinners, but to make human beings aware that the God that is the source of life is best seen when we are empowered to live fully," said Spong, who is an outspoken advocate for an open and engaged Christianity. "This is the only doorway into a Christian reformation and a Christian future."
He added, "The call of the Christ is to empower the incomplete to become whole—not to condemn people, but to call them into being what they were meant to be."
