James 4:1-3

"What causes wars, and what causes fightings among you? Is it not your passions that are at war in your members? You desire and do not have; so you kill. And you covet and cannot obtain; so you fight and wage war. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions" (James 4:1-3 RSV).

This is a very succinct description of the challenge of living our mortal lives. We believe our fears and emotions, and thus we believe in lack and limitation. Acting on those fear-based beliefs, we find ourselves constantly struggling and competing with others who also hold those beliefs. The Truth is that we—and we alone—can change that simply by changing our thinking. We think that lack is 'God's will, and our job is to simply accept it.' We may believe that a distant God might respond to our beseeching prayers. In both cases we "ask wrongly." We allow the passions at war in our ego minds to make demands based on its own fear-based passions. In Truth the infinite Presence of the divine means that abundance, love, and peace are always present within and around us. We ask rightly when we claim our own creative Power to bring our good into expression.
