John 4:23-24 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship..."

Comment:

Dear Friend,
I assume your reference is to John 4:23-24, in which Jesus is speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well. She is concerned because she has been taught that the only place that God is present on earth is in the Temple in Jerusalem. But as a Samaritan, she is not allowed in—or even near—the Temple, which would seem to condemn her to permanent banishment from God.

Jesus reassures her that it really doesn't matter. "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

In his book Mysteries of John, Charles Fillmore writes of this passage that our limited, mortal understanding "is attached to localities, forms and conditions in the world. It believes in the importance of places of worship and in the observance of outward forms. The Mind of Spirit puts all such formalities aside and proclaims the universality of spiritual forces."

One of the divine attributes is Omnipresence, meaning that God is as infinite, loving, powerful and available within each of us as in any temple or religious structure in the world. In Unity we don't go to church believing that there is "more God" there than elsewhere. We come together, not to receive God, but to share the God Presence in each and all of us, and to support each other as we learn how to expand our awareness and expression of that indwelling Christ Presence.

Blessings!
