Jesus

Who or What Is the Christ?

You have different sets of clothes and each change of clothes gives you a different look. Yet no matter what clothes you put on, you are still you.

Perhaps it will help to think of your Christ Self in a similar way—it doesn't change, either no matter how many different ways you look or act on the outside. The real you—that Christ Self—is always perfect and makes you the one-of-a-kind individual you are.

The Christ is the presence of God in each of us. (Does this definition of the Christ have a familiar ring to it? Ten points if you guessed that your Spirit and the Christ are the same thing.)

Perfection

In this broad earth of ours
Amid the measureless grossness and the slag,
Enclosed and safe within its central heart,
Nestles the seed of Perfection.

The great mystic-poet Walt Whitman, in his “Song of the Universal,” expressed a truth that most of us recognize as an ideal but not as reality. We perceive that somewhere within us exists that spark of divinity, the “seed of Perfection.” Jesus, however, said, “You, therefore, must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

The Easter of Your Life

Christianity's most sacred holiday is more than the celebration of the life of Jesus. It is the celebration of the potential that Jesus represents and the knowledge that we, too, are capable of leading a life that shines with the light of God.

Heaven Can Be So Cold

Heaven Can Be So Cold

“Heaven’s where you live it,
So the prophets say.
Heaven is within you.
Find that place today.”

   —Barbara Louise Clark

“Come here, Mama,” my daughter, Danielle, called to me excitedly as she stared outside the window. “Now!” Hearing her urgency, but wanting to finish my breakfast, I reluctantly hurried to look outdoors. Twenty-plus inches of snow on the ground, and being trapped in the house like an icy prison for days had made me grouchy. I did not want to move.

“Look; you see it?” I saw nothing, only whiteness amid a snow-capped landscape. “The tree,” she pointed as I peered closer.

Choosing Gratitude

“Help me learn how to pray.” It is a statement or question that as a minister, I get often. As I read the Gospels, I notice that Jesus must have also gotten that question quite a bit because so much of his teachings are on how to pray.

One lesson that Jesus gives over and over again is on the power of gratitude as a prayer. So often we think of gratitude as an effect. We say thank you after the fact. But when you read the stories of Jesus, particularly the stories of the miracles, we find him giving thanks to the Father in advance of his request.

Jesus and Homosexuality

Jesus and Homosexuality

The September/October 2010 issue of Unity Magazine features an important article by Ken Daigle about homosexuality and Scripture. In it, Daigle closely examines key passages that are cited by fundamentalist Christians as evidence that God condemns homosexuals. Daigle concludes that the translations of the Bible’s original passages written in Greek are inconclusive at best; moreover, they have tended to be interpreted according to each translator’s biases and personal or political motives.

In Everything, Have Faith in God!

TODAY IS THE DAY to keep on having faith in God. In everything, have faith in God's love and wisdom at work in your life. In everything that has already occurred, choose to have faith and know that God's presence and power were active. In everything happening in this moment, have faith that God is present and in control of all details. In thoughts of the future, again take hold of the idea: In everything, I have faith in God!

A Child's Healing

A Child's Healing; child with apples

Jesus prayed for children, knowing that they hold a special place in the heart of God. He prayed for them with unshakable faith in God's power to bless and heal them. Jesus knew that God is always present in each child as pure life, health, strength and perfection. He proved again and again that a loving heart and a mind filled with faith can call forth this indwelling spirit of life.
