SILENCE

The Silence

The Silence

There is only one way to experience "the silence" and that is to be silent, physically and emotionally silent. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through the process called meditation.

Small Investments Bring Big Benefits
Sitting quietly, with the body relaxed and the mind stilled, brings many physical and emotional benefits. It reduces tension and stress, lightens anxiety, lowers blood pressure, increases energy levels, improves sleep patterns, helps to decrease harmful body chemicals and increase beneficial ones. It does all this and much more.

The Volcano That Taught Me to Listen

For about half my life, I thought of prayer as my activity. I would talk to God, telling God all of my thoughts, concerns, and wishes. When I was done, I would thank God and be on my way with the rest of my daily routine. Only later did I discover that a deeper dimension of prayer, perhaps the most important, is listening. Some call it the Silence. It is where we meet God's activity.

Silence Before the Mystery of Life

Silence Before the Mystery of Life

Silence before the awesome Presence and Power of the Divine is a continuous biblical theme. Elijah's encounter with the "the still small voice" of the King James Bible is better rendered by the New Revised Standard Version:

Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

Silence: A Profound Practice

Silence: A Profound Practice

We tend to think a grand spiritual quest is necessary to discover God and our inner divinity. But there is no need to go anywhere or do anything to find God. In the midst of all experience, whether we label it spiritual or human, is Silence. Silence is the Ground of All Being. The modern-day Christian mystic Father Thomas Keating says, "The language of God is Silence. Everything else is a poor translation."

In the Silence

The silence is a holy place, a place of stillness and peace. It is not far away. It is right where you are now. It is right where you are whenever you shut the doors of your senses, still the importuning of your thoughts, and turn to God. When you enter, the world outside and its troubles melt away; when you leave, your body and mind are stilled, refreshed and restored.
