Your Untapped Potential

The Bible story of the talents is a familiar one. One servant received five talents, another two, another one. Two of the servants used, or invested, their talents and increased them. The third servant guarded his closely for fear of losing it. Those servants who used and increased their talents were given more, and the servant who fearfully clung to his had it taken away and given to the servant with ten talents.

The Little Foxes

The Little Foxes

Negative thoughts are like the little foxes mentioned in the Bible that destroy the vineyard. If such thoughts are not denied expression they may grow in numbers and destroy a portion of the crop of good things that are growing into fruition in your life. God has planted fruitful vines in the vineyard of your soul; you must not let the little foxes of negative thought destroy them. ...

God is All

God is All

If I had one wish for the world, it would be that every adult reexamine his or her view of God at least once per decade. God may not change, but people do, and we outgrow our old concepts. The ideas about God that we held at six will not serve us at sixteen and certainly not sixty. Just as children may outgrow peanut butter and opt for spicy curries, we can assimilate more and different ideas about the universe and its workings as we evolve. ...

My childhood view of God was an old man in the sky, watching my every move. This God loved me, I was told, but this God refused to love anyone who didn't profess faith in Jesus and would send them to hell. And, by the way, God monitored my thoughts. I'd better be careful.

Forget the Past

Forget the Past

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul made a beautiful statement about forgetting the past. He said, Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. If Paul had spent most of his time thinking about the mistakes he made in the past, the persecutions he took part in, and had let his mind dwell morbidly on these experiences, he would not have been able to press on to the great challenge before him. That challenge was learning to love and apply the idealistic teachings he had learned from Jesus.

Your Fortune Begins With You

Your Fortune Begins With You

...It is an important moment in your life when you discover for yourself the great Truth that things may happen around you, and things may happen to you, but the only things that really count are the things that happen in you. You may have precious little control of the elements or the fluctuation of the stock market or the unpredictable behavior of people. However, you live in a world of your consciousness, which is the sum total of the thoughts of your mind. And you can control what goes on in your mind. This is not to say that it is easy but to establish that it is possible.

How to Turn Your Life Around

If you are not happy with the things that are repeatedly happening in your life, or with the direction in which you seem to be moving, you can turn it around. But first you must understand that it is your life, that you live in a world of your own thoughts, and that you can change your life by altering your thoughts whenever you really want to do so. This is not to say it is easy, but it is possible.

Give Others Room to Grow and Change

Give Others Room to Grow and Change

Do you hold people hostage to their past? Do you hold people hostage to their last mistake or their worst fault? If you've ever been held hostage in such a way, you know it doesn't feel very good. Are you as bad as the worst mistake you've ever made? Of course you aren't. Are you as bad as your worst shortcoming or inadequacy? No, you're not. There's much more to you than the worst mistake you've ever made or the prickliest part of your personality.

A Bond of Love

A Bond of Love

The chirping was persistent, and within that sound was an appeal for help that I couldn't deny. As I often did after school in my early teens, I had gone for a walk in the woods near my house. And it was there that I heard the pitiful sound of a baby bird coming from somewhere on the ground. Being a nature-lover who lived in the country, I was well-versed in raising and caring for animals, so I went to see if I could help.

In no time at all, I found the baby bird. Looking up into the trees, I did not see a nest from which it could have fallen. … Scooping up the hatchling, I headed back to my house.
