For decades, I’ve started every morning with Daily Word®, but never did its messages mean more to me than when I sat in a chemotherapy chair and realized I was dying from the inside out—not from cancer, but from measuring my worth by medical charts alone.

The wake-up call came after my fourth treatment. I had lost 24 pounds in a week. My tears, laced with toxins, burned my cheeks. I felt hollowed out physically, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s when it hit me: I had confused healing with curing. I was letting doctors and medical outcomes define my wellness and sense of wholeness, just as I had watched my parents do during their own cancer battles years before.

My first instinct when diagnosed with breast cancer—one year and one day after having open-heart surgery—was medicine, not meditation. Surgeons and scans, not silence and prayer. Though doctors assured me my condition was treatable, I felt empty. I had set aside the faith that once carried me through every challenge and found myself leaning on medicine alone, measuring progress only by blood counts and scan results.

The Realization of Wholeness

Sitting in that chemo chair, I remembered what Unity teaches: True healing is a return to the realization of wholeness, not merely the absence of disease. Real wellness isn’t determined by what doctors predict but by my connection to the Divine within. I had been so focused on curing my body that I had forgotten to heal my soul.

Against my doctors’ advice, I completed four of six recommended chemotherapy treatments. This wasn’t denial or giving up—it was choosing to trust indwelling Spirit for guidance. After I had watched my mom lose the will to fight and live when her treatments had become too intense, I knew I didn’t want the same outcome for myself.

“Healing is remembering divine wholeness, regardless of physical circumstances. True wellness flows from within, and no diagnosis, medical report, or treatment plan can diminish the radiant expression of God that I am.”

I turned within, affirming: I am guided by divine mind. I am strengthened by divine life. I am restored by divine love. Instead of measuring progress by medical charts, I began measuring it by inner peace. Because of my parents’ early deaths, I taught myself to live for today because tomorrow isn’t promised. I am also a perpetual optimist. Those two traits, together with the treatment plan, my experience of it, and the fact that I had met the minimum treatment requirement, led to my complete faith that I was going to be okay, no matter the outcome.

A New Understanding

Through daily journaling, I processed this new understanding. On paper, I thanked the very chemicals that felt toxic for having done their part to heal me. Because I believe gratitude is the antidote for any resentment or frustration, I decided that I had come to terms with the completion of my chemo, but not with the chemo itself. I needed to let it do its work by blessing it rather than blaming it. I also acknowledged my deepest healing came from remembering my wholeness in God. Radical gratitude grew from those pages—not just for pleasant moments, but for the entire journey that was teaching me the difference between fixing and healing.

I could have let managing my medical care consume all my energy. Instead, I shifted my attention from the chaos of treatment to the wholeness I could nurture within.

I learned that healing isn’t about mastering every medical detail but about allowing divine support to flow—both through the hands of doctors and other medical personnel and through the peace that surpasses understanding.

Today, I no longer measure wellness by medical outcomes alone. I continue to see my oncologist to stay on top of any cancer recurrences. My body continues to mend, but more important, my soul knows its wholeness. I live joyfully, at peace with mortality, grateful for each breath—not because my scans are clear, but because I remember who I truly am. Each morning, pen in hand, Daily Word beside me, I return to this truth: Healing is remembering divine wholeness, regardless of physical circumstances. True wellness flows from within, and no diagnosis, medical report, or treatment plan can diminish the radiant expression of God that I am.

That is the lesson that anchors me daily: I am never alone, always guided, and—no matter my physical condition—eternally whole.
