Faith to Move Mountains
Celebrate the power of faith
In 2007 I felt eager for my life to change. I had grown bored and restless living on the East Coast and was ready to realize my dream of living out West. Thing was, I had never attempted a move of that magnitude before. I owned my home and would have to sell it. I had never done that before either. I would also be leaving an area where I had deep roots and lots of friends to relocate to a place where I had no ties and only a few casual acquaintances. Yet, the pull to uproot myself felt so strong, I did not question it. I didn’t even question how I would do it, although, in retrospect, I probably should have.
Like most major undertakings, some aspects of the move went smoothly, and others didn’t. But through it all, I knew I was moving in the right direction and believed with understanding faith it would all work out well. Faith was my companion on every part of that adventure. It helped me trust I would have what I needed when I needed it, even when I didn’t know how it would all come together. Even more, my faith helped me trust myself as I heeded my inner guidance and used spiritual wisdom to discern my best choices.
Faith and Affirmative Prayer
I was reminded of that experience when I learned of this year’s theme for World Day of Prayer, “Moving Mountains.”
I have learned so much about prayer since finding Unity almost 25 years ago. Like many, I came to Unity believing prayer consisted of asking God for things and then hoping those prayers would be answered. Through it all, I stayed passive, a bystander to the manifestation process, waiting for God to work it all out for me.
I understand prayer differently now. When I decided to move across the U.S., I didn’t pray to God to make it happen for me. Instead, I practiced affirmative prayer—speaking denials and affirmations, claiming divine ideas, and using my imagination to visualize my new life. The faith I had was rooted in the understanding of God as omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence and of myself as a living embodiment of those divine qualities. It made all the difference as I moved in the direction of my dream.
Through my faith, I believed in the presence and power of God within me. I believed in my ability to seize the best opportunities and trusted my inner guidance. And I believed I had what it took to make such a big change and be successful. Since 2007, I have pursued other dreams and have realized other goals. Each time I reached beyond my comfort zone to take a new kind of leap, I leaned into my faith, my belief in God and my belief in myself as a divine being.
Let’s Move Mountains
I will be attending next week’s World Day of Prayer and pray you will join me. Together, we can celebrate the awesome power of faith and more fully live into Jesus’ promise, “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
