South Kansas City Airbnb offers cool luxury in convenient country setting

My husband, Ali, and I live just outside Kansas City, so when we decided we were up for a brief staycation, Hummingbird Vista—the newest Airbnb property at Unity Village—seemed like the perfect place.

I wasn’t sure quite what to expect of an early-1930s English Cotswold-style home as an Airbnb experience, but it was far and away more enjoyable than any spare bedroom or studio apartment I’ve stayed at through the rental service before.

More Than Just a Spare Room

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom house (which has been used as a women’s dormitory for ministerial students as well as for VIP guest speaker accommodations) has plenty of vintage charm with gorgeous hardwood flooring, a beautiful staircase, and original built-in living room closets stocked with soft blankets and a variety of board games.

But there’s lots of updated luxury, too, like a brand-new full kitchen, renovated bathrooms, a remote-controlled fireplace, and high-speed internet access. (And features more typical of a modern rented room: linens, toiletries, basic kitchenware, cable access, and free parking.)

We grabbed some glasses from the wet bar and poured a beer to take out to the new wooden deck. There, we sat on the comfortable patio furniture while we admired the exterior of the building and its picturesque roofline—as well as the old stone walls and massive trees that dot the Unity campus landscape. Other than a handful of golfers on the adjacent nine-hole course, no one else was in sight.

Unity Village: The Ultimate Amenity

We then finished our tour of the interior, marveling at odd-size closets and cubbyholes and making mental shopping lists of the décor choices we’d like to replicate in our own home.

Ready for dinner, we picked a local pizza place in one of a few different retail and dining areas nearby, offering several restaurant options.

We found so much to enjoy about Hummingbird Vista that I was already brainstorming excuses to come back for another stay before we had even checked out.

Hummingbird Vista is a moderate walk from the famed Unity Tower, the Village’s labyrinth, the entrance to the 2.4-mile Carl L. Chinnery Nature Trail, the Unity Village Bookstore and Coffee Shop, and the Unity Village Hotel and Conference Center (where Airbnb guests check in upon arrival and also where they go for a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning).

There’s also an award-winning rose garden, the largest fountain display in the Kansas City metro area, and Unity Village’s distinctive Mediterranean architecture to admire.

The Perfect Kansas City Staycation

We found so much to enjoy about Hummingbird Vista that I was already brainstorming excuses to come back for another stay before we had even checked out: holiday dinners, book club overnights, maybe just my own personal writer’s retreat?

The house comfortably accommodates 12 guests (two bedrooms have a king-size bed; the other two bedrooms each have two double beds) and has plenty of seating at a large dining table, kitchen barstools, and a big L-shaped couch.

The furniture and décor are fun and playful, with extra-soft brightly colored throw pillows and sweet quotes on the walls.

Hummingbird Vista and Fillmore Manor (Unity Village’s first Airbnb property, a renovated 1921 home that accommodates up to 10 guests) are available for reservations year-round at airbnb.com.
