Igniting Your Inner Light: Tips for Overcoming Winter Blues
Winter is a difficult time for many people with the short days, the frigid weather, and reduced sunlight leading to feelings of isolation, lethargy, or sadness. There are many biological changes that lead people to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Our circadian rhythms can be disrupted by the reduced sunlight; our serotonin (also known as the “happy chemical” that helps us to regulate mood) can be lower; and melatonin can even increase, making many feel sleepy and less energized.
While these seasonal changes affect millions, they don’t have to define our experience. Here are some spiritually grounded ways to reignite your vitality and embrace the season. These practices can be powerful on their own, but they can also be effective when combined with professional therapy or medication, which you should seek if you are experiencing more severe or debilitating depression.
Move Your Body
Physical movement can be one of the best antidotes to the sluggishness that often accompanies winter. Going for walks outside can help us absorb more natural light, but even if the weather where you are doesn’t allow for that, you may want to try yoga, dancing, tai chi, and so on. There are a ton of free exercise videos on YouTube. Or consider joining a fitness class, which is a great way to be social and combat feelings of isolation.
Connect with Community
There are many ways to connect with community and combat feelings of loneliness, whether that’s through joining a spiritual community, a book club, or even reaching out to friends and family more. There are also many online communities you can join. These connections nurture our sense of belonging and dissolve the shadows of isolation.
Focus on Gratitude
Gratitude shifts our focus, opening the heart to life’s blessings even amid the shorter, colder days. Myrtle Fillmore described gratitude as a “quality of the soul.” “Heaven and earth listen and respond to the soul that is quickened into praise and thanksgiving,” she said. “Praise is gratitude in action.” Start a daily practice of writing down three things you are grateful for to increase gratitude in your life.
Embrace the Light
One of the biggest triggers for winter blues is the reduced sunlight. However, we can counter this by intentionally seeking light. Light more candles, use brighter lamps, and make a point to look out of windows as much as you can.
Turn Within
Although it’s true that winter is a darker and colder time, it can also be a sacred time to turn within and reconnect with our divine essence. We can use meditation and affirmative prayer to access the peace and wisdom that transcends any external conditions. This turning within can transform loneliness into spiritual growth It’s also important to remember that winter is temporary. There is a deeper inner light within that shines brighter than any external circumstances. By focusing on that inner light, you can align with the timeless truth that you are a radiant expression of the Divine. Just as the earth quietly prepares for spring beneath the snow, your spirit is already turning toward renewal—even in the heart of winter.
