After the flurry of eating at Thanksgiving and shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday calls us back to the heart of the holiday season. Giving Tuesday is a celebration of generosity that reminds us that giving is a spiritual practice. When we give from a place of love and kindness, we participate in the divine flow of life that connects us all.

Yet the true blessing of generosity lies not only in what it attracts to us but in what it awakens within us.

Giving Tuesday—always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving—began in 2012 when a small group at a New York City community center called the 92nd Street Y and asked a simple question: What if there were a day dedicated to generosity? What began as a day to counterbalance the consumerism of the holiday season has become a global movement. On the Giving Tuesday website, they remind us, “Whether it’s offering a kind smile, a helping hand, or an hour of your time—these acts have a way of rippling out, becoming part of something much greater. That is the power of radical generosity.”

The Spiritual Power of Generosity

Each time we give—whether it’s a financial gift, a prayer, a kind word, or our time and presence—we affirm our faith in abundance. Giving shifts our awareness from limitation to possibility, from fear to love. It reminds us that we are channels through which divine good flows.

As Unity cofounder Charles Fillmore said, “It is necessary to give freely if we are to receive freely … The knowledge that substance is omnipresent and that people cannot, therefore, impoverish themselves by giving (but rather will increase their supply) will enable us to give freely and cheerfully.”

Yet the true blessing of generosity lies not only in what it attracts to us but in what it awakens within us. Every act of giving opens the heart. It connects us with others and with our own divine nature. In giving, we remember that we are part of something greater. We remember that the love we share is the love of God expressing through us.

Whether we’re donating to a cause, offering a listening ear, or volunteering in our community, we participate in the sacred circulation of good that sustains and uplifts the world.

Ideas for Giving Tuesday

There are many ways to participate in Giving Tuesday. Here are some suggestions:

  • Donate money to a nonprofit organization or community.
  • Volunteer for a local food pantry or donate food.
  • Pay for the person behind you at the drive-thru.
  • Tuck a grocery store gift card and note in a shopping basket.
  • Post about your favorite cause on social media and encourage your friends to participate in Giving Tuesday.
  • Help your neighbor with yard work.
  • Volunteer to do remote administrative or marketing work for an organization. (This is a great option for people who can’t physically go somewhere to volunteer.)
  • Donate pet food and toys to animal shelters and rescues.

Living in the Flow of Giving

More than just a day on the calendar, Giving Tuesday reminds us who we are as spiritual beings. When we give cheerfully, we live from the awareness that love and abundance are infinite. When we spread love by speaking a kind word, offering a prayer, or giving to others with our time and/or treasure, we transform the world, one heart at a time.

Support our ministry and help provide prayer, hope, and practical spiritual teachings to people around the world.
