Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. (Deuteronomy 5:12)

Question:

How should one observe the Sabbath? The job situation makes keeping it holy difficult.

Comment:

Metaphysically, the Sabbath is not simply a specific day of the week. (Indeed, there’s no agreement on which day that might be; for some, it’s Saturday, for others Sunday.) Charles Fillmore, Unity’s co-founder, writes: “The Sabbath is kept any time we enter into spiritual consciousness and rest from thoughts of temporal things. We let go of the external observance of days, because every day is a Sabbath on which we retire into Spirit.”

In other words, we honor the Sabbath by ensuring that we set aside a regular time in the flow of our lives to rest in the Presence of the divine. It’s an essential part of the creative process—we do the work that’s ours to do, and then we rest in faith, allowing the Lord of our being to complete the process within us.

Blessings!
