John 14:6 I am the way, and the truth, and the life...
John 14:6
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
Comment:
Commentary In the first sentence, Jesus is referring to himself as the spiritual identity of every person. “I am” refers to the eternal Spirit of God. “… before Abraham was, I am” (Jn. 8:58). In the second sentence, Jesus uses the personal pronoun of “me,” implying his personal self-identity with the “I am.” This is the same “me” with whom we are personally united as indicated later in the chapter, “… I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (Jn. 14:20).
Interpretation The Spirit of God in me is my authentic identity (“I Am”). This is my access to conscious union with God (“the way”); my ability to see and affirm God’s presence and activity in the midst of all things (“the truth”); and my connection with the eternal flow of healing and vitalizing life energy (“the life”). Nothing and no one (“no one”) gives me the experience of communion with the Divine (“comes to the Father”), except the self-awareness that God expresses in and through me (“except through me”).
Summation The Spirit of God in us is our authentic identity and true nature. To recognize this about ourselves is to join with Jesus Christ in loving communion with God; in knowing and calling forth the presence of God in all things; and in activating the healing power of divine life.
