Luke 15:12
“And his younger son said to him, ‘My father, give me the portion which is coming to me from your house.’ And he divided to them his possessions.”
Question:
This passage just jumped out at me when I read it this morning! I suddenly “got” that the elder brother was given his share of the inheritance at the same time as the younger brother—he just didn’t choose to go and squander it. Yet he complained when the younger brother came back and had the fatted ox killed for a party. I thought about how we humans often complain about supposed lack when in fact we have all that we need, at all times! Indeed, “you are always with me, and everything which is mine is yours” (v.31). Just wanted to share that with you!
Comment:
Nice realization, Nancy. The older brother is that part of our consciousness that feels victimized, even when we’re not. I like to think that the younger son, on his next journey of exploration and creation (because he’s certainly not going to be content simply staying home), takes the older brother with him!
