Question:

I am not sure exactly where Satan is in the Bible, but my question is: If Satan is supposed to be a fallen angel, who was cast out of heaven? I have always wondered what Satan represents. Is Satan a fallen angel, or is Satan our own fight with temptation?

The name 'Satan' is not often used in the Bible; the term 'devil' is more common, along with Beelzebub, Lucifer, and other names. They refer to an embodiment of evil, a focal point for fear-based thoughts and beliefs that strive to contradict our relationship to the Divine. The familiar story of Satan as an archangel thrown out of heaven for leading a rebellion against God is not found in the Bible. It has its source in a variety of nonscriptural Hebrew legends and folktales. In Hebrew scripture, the term 'Satan' is taken to mean 'adversary,' and refers to both human and spiritual entities who sometimes seem to stand in the way of our spiritual purpose.

There is no doubt that there is great power attached to the negative, fear-based error thoughts we have accumulated in our collective consciousness. You don't have to give that power a name to realize the obstacles it can create. But it is not a power opposite to God. There can be no power opposite to a Divinity we define as omnipotence. It is an illusion we have created, and it has only as much power as we give it through our ignorance of our Oneness with the Divine. As we learn the Truth about that Oneness, the ignorance fades, as does the apparent power we have created out of that ignorance.
