(I'm going to start with verse 7 to put verse 9 into context.)  "And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

Comment:

Exactly what the 'thorn' was in Paul's flesh has been much debated through the years. In fact, though, it really doesn't matter. Any thorn will do in grasping the point Paul is making. He had prayed three times for the thorn to be removed, without success. Finally, he was guided by Spirit to realize the thorn was not a hindrance, but a blessing. In continuing his work despite the affliction, Paul was reminded that he was not doing the work on his own; he was an imperfect channel for the energy of Spirit.

It's an important realization for us as well. Any time our ego mind is tempted to take credit for our own spiritual progress, we will receive a reminder of our limited mortal selves, so we can recognize it's the spiritual Being that is our true identity guiding us forward. So what seems to be an affliction may be seen as a positive guide.

Blessings!
