Question:

Why is there no mention of God? I am writing a paper on Esther's story, specifically in terms of her courage. Can you help?

Comment:

The lack of any reference to God in the Book of Esther made it a very controversial addition to Hebrew scripture. Many rabbis felt that it did not belong. It was probably included because it is the story that justifies Purim, one of the great festivals of the Jewish year. It is a lovely legend, probably with a factual basis, since scholars have found extra-biblical references to some of the characters.

Actually, I think God is very much present in the Book of Esther. It is the Presence of God within her that allows Esther to bravely and lovingly use her beauty, gifts, and social status on behalf of her people. It tells us, I think, that we can't always expect God to act upon us, or on our behalf. We often are called to be God in action, trusting our inner guidance to show us the steps to take.

Blessings!
