Question:

We are getting ready to participate in our Prayer Chaplains retreat soon and our theme is I AM, WE ARE, ADVENTURES IN ONENESS. I was curious as to the meaning of "I AM' in Unity’s interpretation, also for "WE ARE.”

Comment:

"I AM" are probably the two most important words in the entirety of the Bible. They represent our personal, intimate link to the divine. When Moses, standing before the burning bush (Exodus 3), asks the voice calling him to a great spiritual work just what his name is, the voice replies "I AM who I AM ... This is my name forever." And in the Gospel of John, Jesus uses the same words to name and define the Christ Presence in each of us that he was calling his followers to recognize and believe—not just in him, but in themselves as well. I AM the Good Shepherd. I AM the way, the truth and the life. I AM the bread of life. The Christ—the Presence of God indwelling in each of us—is the creative power that expresses through every choice we make, every belief we affirm. That's why it's so important that we guard the words carefully, and not attach them to limited human experiences. If we say "I AM really tired," for example, we are creating that fact. We can recognize that we "feel" tired, but to link 'tired' to our I AM power means that we are creating “tired” as an experience in our lives. Owning, guarding and lovingly using our I AM power is our great spiritual work to do. It is challenging—especially when we try to do it alone. And so "We Are" affirms that our spiritual work is easier and more joyful when we come together in spiritual community to support each other and affirm the Power we share. Have a wonderful retreat!

Blessings!
