John 10
Comment:
I’m not going to copy out the entire chapter. It’s easy to understand, I think, why it would appeal to a small child, with its imagery of sheep and shepherds. The love and protection associated with a shepherd standing watch over his sheep is strong and appealing. And as we grow in awareness, the imagery becomes even more important. Jesus is describing how the Christ—the ‘I AM’ of his being and of ours—guides and supports us through this experience of human duality. The sheep are our myriad thoughts; some of them are compatible with our spiritual truth, and others are not. Distinguishing one from the other can be overwhelming if we rely on our limited mental faculties. But the Christ Voice within us is the loving shepherd that ‘knows his own.’ In the guidance of that Voice, we can easily recognize the thoughts and ideas that support and express our spiritual process.
Those who were hearing Jesus’ words were angry because they misunderstood his message. They thought he was claiming unique powers and a unique relationship to God. He was, indeed, acknowledging that he was, in that moment, uniquely the Christ in expression. But he was inviting everyone to find the same Christ Presence within themselves, and to trust it as a loving guide through the distractions, challenges, and confusion of our shared human experience.
Blessings!
