"He said to them, 'Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.' So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish" (John 21:6).

Question:

Studying Butterworth, who uses it in reference to real affluence and wanting to understand it and relate it to our spiritual health in body as well.

Comment:

For me, this verse does, indeed, describe the source of 'real affluence,' but it is much more expansive than that. The men—experienced fishers all—were plying their trade, making a living by 'knowing what they know.' Their fathers always fished off the left side of the boat, and their fathers before them, so they always fished off the left side of the boat. The result is consistently just barely enough. Jesus as the Christ gives them a new inspiration: switch sides. And the result is an abundance of fish.

There have been many times in my life when I have unknowingly been making choices of limitation based on what I think I know, or what I've been taught, or the way I've always done it. It may produce a sufficiency—of fish, or health, or money, or love—but we're not here as Spirit to live lives of sufficiency. There is that within us that is a Source of infinite good. It may, and often does, go against common practice or traditional belief. If we trust it, we will be placing our faith in our Oneness with Spirit. And the result of that faith will be the creation of all Good.

Blessings!
