John 6:16-21
“When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going” (John 6:16-21).
Comment:
This demonstration of spiritual power can also be found in the gospels of both Mark and Matthew, so it must have been a familiar story among the early followers of Jesus. (Only Matthew adds the attempt of Peter to also walk on the water.) Like all of the so-called 'miracles,' I believe this one simply (and profoundly) represents Jesus' infinitely higher ability to understand The Law according to which the divine expresses, and to manifest that understanding in ways that confound and frighten his immediate disciples. Of course, his demonstrations are meant for us as well. Metaphysically, we are being shown that it is not always necessary to accept negative manifestations (the storm) and plow through challenges. Sometimes we can simply rise above even the darkest storms—whether in the world or in our own consciousness—and in doing so, bring calm and peace to our minds, and to our life experience.
Blessings!
