"And he said to them, 'How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" (Luke 2:49 RSV)

Question:

I am writing the mission statement  for my business. My mission is to work in Love. I would appreciate further clarification on what this verse means.

Comment:

This is the only passage in the Gospels that refers to Jesus' childhood, and it's found only in Luke. It tells of Jesus being presented at the Temple in Jerusalem. As his parents were returning to Nazareth, they realized he was missing. They found him in the temple, talking to some of the elders. His parents expressed their concern and relief, and Jesus responded with the questions above.

It suggests to me a 12-year-old boy who has been living with a constant sense of being somehow different. He feels at home only in the Temple and is hoping to find answers to his questions from the elders. He is mildly surprised that his parents wouldn't understand what he was trying to accomplish.

I think it suggests to us that our own sense of spiritual purpose may surprise or disturb others. Jesus returns with his parents to his life in Nazareth. So, too, we must sometimes continue to live and enjoy our human experience, certain that our spiritual path will unfold in its own time.

Blessings!
