“Again the high priest asked him, 'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?' And Jesus said, ‘I am’” (Mark 14:61-62a RSV).

Question:

I am trying to understand Unity's belief of who Jesus is. Your interpretation of Jesus' answer of “I am” to the question of “Are you the Christ?” may be a help. Thank you.

Comment:

It is not merely Jesus of Nazareth who moves through the arrest, trial and crucifixion—it is Jesus Christ, the full expression of the divine through the human. Throughout the Gospels—particularly in the Gospel of John—Jesus' great “I am” statements indicate that he is speaking as the Christ, the aspect of the divine that named itself in Exodus as “I AM that I AM.”  In Unity belief, Jesus is not uniquely the Christ. He is demonstrating the Christ potential that is the true identity of each of us. His expression of the Christ is unique, but the Christ potential is present in each of us. He calls us, not to worship the Christ that he demonstrated, but to use his teachings and example to become our own unique expressions of that Christ energy.

Blessings!
