"'Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.'"

Comment:

I think what we have here is Jesus, very early in his ministry, demonstrating a very human desire to "show off" for people in his hometown who have known him all his life. It doesn't work; they are not impressed, choosing to "know what they know" about who he is based solely on the past. Jesus turns the episode into a learning experience for himself and his followers as well. Prophets, who are living strictly from their connection with Spirit, cannot expect others to be impressed.

I think the lesson is important to us as we grow on our own spiritual path. We can't expend energy trying to impress others. If we keep our focus on our spiritual Truth, others may be drawn to us by example; but impressing others cannot be our purpose.
