Matthew 4:18-20 "As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers..."
"As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.' Immediately they left their nets and followed him" (Matthew 4:18-20).
Question:
Like so much of Jesus' ministry, this passage offers no clear and easy answers. It rather invites us to grow spiritually by living with the questions. How did Jesus know to call these particular fishermen? What did he see in these (apparent) strangers that told him they were ready to respond to his message? And why did Peter and Andrew leave the security of their lives so readily to follow a mysterious stranger?
Comment:
However we answer the questions, we may be sure that we will experience this same moment—probably often—as our own spiritual growth unfolds. However comfortable and secure our lives may be, there is that within us that is eager to "be about the Father's business"—that is, to contribute our own creative energy to the great project of bringing into expression the new consciousness that Jesus describes as the kingdom of heaven. The Christ consciousness within us recognizes and responds to every opportunity to move spiritually forward. Our mortal minds may be filled with doubts and fears. But it's only when we move through those doubts and fears, put down the nets of daily routine and limited thinking, and follow the guidance of the Christ that we can achieve the spiritual purpose that brings us into human expression. Blessings!
