Praise the Lord
Question:
The Old Testament is filled with directions to “praise” the Lord. I am interested in understanding the teachings of Jesus on this topic particularly from a metaphysical point of view. I know this is a rather large and general topic. So it may not be an appropriate question for you. I am trying to understand why and how to praise the Lord. I am preparing to give a talk on this topic. If there is a particular Unity publication on the topic, I would appreciate knowing that. To me it seems showing gratitude and setting an example by how we live seems to be what Jesus taught about praising God the Father. Any insights or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. Of course, The Lord’s Prayer statement “Hallowed be thy name” seems to be a statement of praise. Many blessings to you.
Comment:
I think the key here is to understand that the Old Testament “Lord” as synonymous with the New Testament “Christ.” It is “the Father within”—not a distant being who needs to be praised, and responds to that praise. It is “the Lord of our being”—the indwelling Presence of God that is our true identity. So “praise” is not a compliment, it is a choice. We “praise the Lord” when we embrace our true spiritual identity and become willing to allow its Presence and Power to express through us. God does not need or demand to be praised, in the elevated spiritual consciousness that Jesus realized and taught. We need to align ourselves with the Divine to achieve our spiritual purpose. We do that by affirming our Oneness with God, with joy and gratitude and a willingness that our lives be a channel for the Divine. Blessings!
