"Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind" (Psalm 107:28-31 NRSV).

Comment:

Psalm 107 is a wonderful song of thanksgiving—especially for journeys successfully completed. The people had been scattered in exile, and their journeys back were filled with dangers and challenges. But the Lord was with them, and their journeys ended safely. The central theme—repeated several times, like a song lyric—is "Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind."   The awareness of gratitude is equally important for us today. Sometimes our lives feel like stormy seas, and all we can feel is fear and distress. We must 'cry to the Lord' in our trouble—not by beseeching a distant God, but by turning within and connecting with the 'Lord of our being'—the Christ Presence always available to guide, protect and prosper us. Centered in the Christ we will “have quiet” and find ourselves safely at home, no matter where we may be or what may be transpiring around us.   Blessings!
