Psalm 23 and 91
Comment:
The 23rd Psalm is one of the most familiar and beloved passages in the entire Bible, and for very good reason. I can only speak for myself, but I find its comfort and reassurance very helpful as I move through the challenges of this human experience we're sharing.
Metaphysically, we understand the LORD to be synonymous with the Christ—the indwelling Presence of God that is the truth of our spiritual identity. The Christ in me is infinitely powerful, but it's a quiet power; it doesn't shout to get my attention the way some of the negative thoughts in consciousness do. That's why it's important to remember that it is always within me, available to 'shepherd' me lovingly through the shadows of death and evil that seem so real, to the green pastures and still waters of peace, joy, and abundance that are my destination.
Even through the shadows and challenges, however, the Presence of God is always with me—I don't have to wait until the end of my journey to feel and claim that Presence. Even in the face of enemies—metaphysically, fear-based thoughts of separation and unworthiness—The Christ of my being is available to me, feeding me, anointing me with affirmations of my spiritual purpose, filling my cup to overflowing with the energy of Life. The 'goodness and mercy' of the Christ are with me all the days of my life; it's up to me to know that, and to choose always from that rich resource.
Perhaps best known as one of the biblical passages by which Jesus is tempted in the wilderness (cf. Matthew 4:5), Psalm 91 constitutes a ringing affirmation of the Power of God as absolute protection through any challenges life may offer. Metaphysically, we understand 'angels' to represent divine ideas, emanating from Divine Mind and carrying divine guidance, wisdom, and inspiration to our human consciousness. They won't break down our resistance and force their way in, these angels. We must make our consciousness open and receptive to these divine ideas, placing our trust in them rather than in our limited human perspective. When we do—when we choose to dwell in the place of the Most High within us—it is assured that we will be guided safely through all challenges.
It's important to note that there will still be challenges to face. The promise isn't that all challenges will melt away, but that by trusting in our Oneness with Divine Mind, we will move through challenges easily and fearlessly. The curse of another can have absolutely no effect unless we believe in its power. We are the Christ in expression, and if we know that and claim that, there is no power that can affect us or block us from our good.
Blessings!
