"I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained.

Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there” (Gospel of Thomas, 77).

Question:

I thought that it is very profound. He is basically saying you can find me in everything, everywhere you look! I was just hoping you could give me your interpretation of the text because you have a way with words that allows me to understand perfectly the deeper meaning behind verses I've heard all my life.

Comment:

In my several years of answering these questions, this is the first time I've been asked about something in the Gospel of Thomas. So thanks for the question! And what a perfectly beautiful passage to start with!

Any time Jesus begins a statement with the words "I am," we can be certain he is speaking as the Christ, the spiritual Beingness that is the truth of who he is, and who we are. Here, he is describing how infinite, eternal, and omnipresent the Christ is. We are spiritually One with all creation. There is nothing that is not God, which means there is no part of us that is not God. It is from the Christ we are that "all came forth."

Blessings!
