1 Peter 2:23-25 "When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not..."
"When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live in righteousness; by his wounds (or “stripes”) you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls" (1 Peter 2:23-25 NRSV).
Question:
I want to understand the metaphysical view of Jesus, the death and resurrection. The blood of Jesus. The idea that we can only be healed by the stripes of Jesus. Jesus being God. Having to accept Jesus as your personal Savior.
What is the metaphysical view on these subjects?
Comment:
Your overall question is far too broad to be covered in one answer. So let's concentrate on the Bible verse you referenced concerning being “saved by his stripes.” It is clear from language, style, content and thoughts expressed that the letter known as Second Peter was not written by the apostle Peter, but by an elder of the Roman church writing in the last years of the first century CE—a time when early Christians were finding it difficult to hold to their faith in the context of daily life in the Roman Empire. The author's message basically is that they are living between two bookends— the sacrifice of Jesus in crucifixion and the immanent return of Jesus for the final judgment and last days. Because of that immanent return, the author's advice is “Don't make waves.” Wives should live in obedience to even disbelieving husbands (1 Peter 3:1). Slaves should be obedient to even the cruelest of masters (1 Peter 2:18). Why? Because the Second Coming will set everything right. While many people still believe this to be the message of Jesus, it is not supported in the teachings he left with us. He does not ask us to become victims, and he does not promise that he himself will do all the work. He challenges his followers, not to believe in what he did, but to do it ourselves. He expressed his own innate Christ energy as love, life, abundance and healing. He calls us to do the same—to express our own Christ energy through personal choices that will lift the world into the new consciousness he calls “the kingdom of heaven.” Metaphysically, the Second Coming is not about Jesus at all. The Second Coming of the Christ must occur in us, when we follow Jesus' teachings and example to find, embrace and express our own innate Christ nature. Jesus' “wounds” were caused by the judgment and negative reaction of those in the world who felt threatened by his message and ministry. We are “healed” through those wounds if we allow them to become a symbol, not of suffering, but of faith—an "assurance of things hoped for," an affirmation that our innate spiritual Truth cannot be limited or destroyed by the negative energy we may experience in the world. Blessings!
