Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old received divine approval. By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear” (Hebrews 11:1-3 RSV).
Comment:
This great understanding of faith and how it works is basic to the universal spiritual principles that Unity affirms. I think it’s easiest to understand if we begin with verse three; what is seen is made out of “things which do not appear.” The divine substance of God is everywhere present, and it is by speaking the creative intention—the “word of God”—that we bring it into tangible expression. In order to accomplish that creative spiritual purpose, then, we must have assurance and conviction that divine substance is present and available to us always, even when we cannot see it. Simply believing in a distant being named God won’t allow us to claim, experience and work with the God of infinite substance in which we live and move and have our being.
