Luke 22:42
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
Question:
There seems to be a duality between Jesus’ will and that of the Father. Doesn’t Unity say that all our thoughts become reality—and the Kingdom of God is inside us—and there is only ONE will? Why wouldn’t Jesus simply think about what He wanted, instead of seeking a will different from his one? If, for example, I was looking for a thing x in my life, should I affirm it (“I can see x coming into my life”), or should I ask the Father for HIS will (which might be different from mine) to be done?
Thank you!! =)
Comment:
First of all, since Jesus was alone in the garden, and those closest disciples were asleep, there is no way of knowing what he did, in fact, say. What we have is an interpretation by someone writing a generation later.
That said, however, there is sound metaphysical understanding in the passage. True, there can be no conflict between the Divine Mind present in all creation and the Christ Mind present within each of us—because they are one and the same mind. But there can certainly be a difference between Divine Mind and our mortal mind. Jesus is here acknowledging his mortal mind is filled with fear at the demonstration he is about to enter. If there is some way those fears can be allayed, he is open to it. But he never loses his focus on what his Christ Mind tells him he is to do. I think it’s reassuring to know we don’t have to be completely free of fear in order to move forward on our spiritual path. We can lovingly acknowledge the fear without giving it power or priority in our life.
Blessings!
