Psalm 122:1-2

"I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord!' Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem" (Psalm 122:1-2).

Comment:

This psalm, like several others, is called "A Song of Ascents." It was written for pilgrims completing their journey to Jerusalem, and more specifically to the temple within the city, "the house of the Lord." Hundreds of years later, Jesus Christ taught that the temple was, in Truth, within us. Paul understood this clearly and expressed it forcefully in his first letter to the Corinthians. "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16)

If, therefore, we are called to "go to the house of the Lord," we will turn within and find the temple in our own hearts that is the center of our own spiritual identity. Just as Jerusalem was a rich and dazzling experience after the tribulations of the pilgrimage, so are we dazzled by standing in the Truth of our own spiritual power.
