Book of Proverbs
Question:
I am starting my walk with Jesus and I need some confirming that I understand.
Comment:
The document we know as the Book of Proverbs was never intended as a single work. It is a collection of moral and religious sayings and teachings that were probably used to teach Jewish youth in the post-Exile period. Unlike the Psalms, which were concerned with a more exalted perspective on our relationship with the Divine, the Book of Proverbs is concerned with the application of religious teachings to everyday life. The individual proverbs come from at least four different sources, mixed together for teaching convenience.
Since there is no overarching theme, it is impossible to discuss the entire Book of Proverbs as a whole. It's meant to be broken down into pieces, read slowly, and considered separately. I'm sure your 'walk with Jesus' will offer many rich opportunities to turn to the wisdom of this book. If you find yourself with questions about any specific part of it, I hope you'll write again.
Blessings!
