"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house" (Matthew 5:14-15 RSV).

Comment:

You didn't specify a particular passage, but I believe you're referring to this teaching from the Sermon on the Mount. It makes clear, I think, the key point in his ministry. He is not claiming that he, alone, is the light of the world. He's saying that each of us is a unique expression of the same divine light. To know this about ourselves is indeed to "light a lamp" of Truth in our consciousness. And once we light this lamp, we cannot expect it to go unnoticed. Our inner light shines through every choice we make. And this is the spiritual purpose Jesus is calling us to embrace. We are here to light our own lamps by having faith in who we truly are, and to allow this light to shine forth into the world.

Blessings!
