"I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter" (Matthew 12:36).

Comment:

I don't think Jesus is speaking of a wholesale Day of Judgment for everyone, all at once. He is sharing the absolute spiritual Truth that choices have consequences, and while those consequences may sometimes be delayed, they cannot be avoided. There will come a time when we will have to recognize that not only actions, but words, have power. (I think of the 'judgment' more in the spiritual sense of 'discernment' than in the more human emotion of blame.) As he says in the preceding verse, "The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure." The choice is ours, and the consequences will either keep us in ignorance/evil or offer us the opportunity to discern the negative energy and make a new choice.

Blessings!
