Proverbs 22:7

"The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).

Comment:

At first reading this sounds rather harsh, doesn't it? As always, though, it's important to take it in context. We've already been told (22:2) that "The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all." We've also just read that "The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life" (22:4). Once that Truth is established, it becomes important to note that our mortal experience will not always be rooted in that Truth. In this mortal realm the rich will hold power, and lenders will hold great power over borrowers.

The important thing I see here is that in both instance we have a choice! We can be rich or poor, borrower or lender—it's up to us. And the consequences will be what they are, according to the choice we've made.
