Proverbs 6:12-19 "A scoundrel and a villain goes around with crooked speech, winking the eyes..."
A scoundrel and a villain
goes around with crooked speech,
13winking the eyes, shuffling the feet,
pointing the fingers,
14with perverted mind devising evil,
continually sowing discord;
15on such a one calamity will descend suddenly;
in a moment, damage beyond repair.
16There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that hurry to run to evil,
19a lying witness who testifies falsely,
and one who sows discord in a family (Proverbs 6:12-19).
Question:
Does this refer to our friends or our enemies?
Comment:
Neither, really. It's not about our friends or our enemies. It's about us! It is tempting—and always foolish—to use the Bible as a convenient way of passing judgment on other people. Nothing in this passage gives us the right to “play God”—to decide who is guilty of these seven “abominations” to the Lord. It's important to know that these qualities—arrogance, falsehood, disregard for others, malicious manipulation, etc.—will keep us from experiencing the Lord of our being. If we choose to engage in these negative energies, those choices will have negative consequences. That's the working of God—it's not for us to decide who does or does not deserve God's punishment. What we are to do is guard against these energies in ourselves, so that we ourselves can avoid the consequences of negative choices.
Blessings!
