The Divine Is Born in Each of Us

As Christmas draws near, many of us delight in lights, candles, stars, gifts, and songs of joy. These beautiful symbols can also help us understand something even more wonderful: Divine light—the God presence—shines within each of us, always.

God (or Spirit, Love, Light) is not just “out there” but also “in here.” Each of us carries a spark of the Divine, a pure light of goodness, wisdom, peace, and love. Just as a candle is lit from another flame, your inner light is connected to the Great Light, and you can let that light shine.

When you feel kindness, compassion, courage, joy, or the urge to share and help, that is the Divine within you showing up. When you quietly pray, meditate, sing a song, or simply pause and breathe, you are tuning your heart to that divine light inside.

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Christ, who is often called the Light of the World. That light is not only a story from long ago but also a reminder: The light of God lives in each of us, and we can let it shine in our daily lives.

If your family tradition is to decorate the tree, light candles, sing carols, or hang ornaments, remember that each decoration’s beauty reflects the larger beauty of Spirit. Each gift you give or kind word you speak represents the Divine within you shining outward. Just as the Christ child was born to bring light into the world, your own inner light is a gift to yourself and to everyone around you.

O Loving Presence, we give thanks for every child in all the world—for their bright eyes, open hearts, and beautiful souls. May they know, deep inside, the divine light that lives within them. May they grow in love, courage, compassion, and faith. May they always be guided by wisdom, see goodness in themselves and others, and shine their light for all to see.

A Shared Family Prayer Affirming the Divine Within

Source of all light and love, we are grateful for the gift of life and the gift of family. We honor the Divine within each of us and nurture it with kindness, patience, encouragement, and faith. May our home be a safe place for love to grow, for light to shine, and for hearts to open. Guide us to share our light with our neighbors and with the world in simple acts of love. In this Christmas season and always, we say yes to your presence among us and within us.
