A Prayer for Children: Love Is Who You Are

When I was a young girl, my mom dropped me off at school every day, and the last thing she always said was, “Remember, love is who you are.” I didn’t fully understand it back then, but I remember how her words made me feel—safe, seen, and connected.

One day at school, my classmate Maria was very mean to me. She lied to my teacher and accused me of doing something I most certainly hadn’t done. I was devastated.

Fast-forward to the next day at recess. My classmates were being mean to Maria and excluded her from the game of tag they were playing. She was hurt and sat alone in a corner of the playground. Suddenly my mother's words resounded in my heart: “Love is who you are.” I decided to invite Maria to play on the swings with me. The smile on her face taught me more about love than any lesson could.

Love is more than just a feeling—it’s an energy we share. When we speak kindly, offer help, or listen with care, we become love in action. Even small acts—like sharing a snack or giving a hug—help the love inside us to shine brighter. Oh, and that afternoon Maria went to our teacher and confessed that she had actually done the thing she falsely accused me of doing.

Sometimes we forget that love isn’t something we have to earn; it’s something we already are. When we pause, breathe, and feel our hearts, we can sense the light within us growing. And when we share that light, it grows even brighter, connecting us to every person, everywhere.

Surround every child with kindness, courage, and peace that never fades. Let love guide their steps, joy fill their days, and hope warm their hearts.
