Some Prayer Methods Might Surprise You

Our thoughts are prayers, as the song says, and indeed our thoughts can be considered one method of prayer. But there are many more ways we can seek higher consciousness and know that God is with us.

What are some of the ways we can pray? Some are tools we use to bring ourselves into a space of stillness and peace, where the presence of God can be more fully known. Others involve activity and outright joy.

First, we can take time to pray in the traditional way. We can close our eyes, breathe, and speak to God directly. We can start by setting the intention for prayer. I say something like, “Dear Spirit, here and now, in the stillness of this moment, I know that you are present with me. I affirm your love and guidance.” This kind of statement calms my body and mind so I can be as present as possible for my prayer time.

Many times throughout the day I pray just to remind myself of God’s close and eternal presence. I don’t always have something specific to pray about.

Spending time in nature is one of my favorite ways to pray. Walking beneath the trees, listening to birdsong, sitting in the grass, and watching wildlife brings me peace. I can see that a divine presence of creation and beauty is at the center of all life. Our planet is truly an amazing place, and we are a vital part of it. Spending time in nature can provide a sense of belonging.

But prayer is not necessarily quiet. We might do some things naturally that we never considered to be prayer. Anything that makes my heart sing is connection with God.

Do you love music or painting? Spending time caring for pets or other animals? Is exercise a joyful activity? Perhaps you love to write, draw, cook, or create something through arts and crafts. Using our talents and skills is a way we can pray. When we do something we love, that positive feeling is God expressing through us and out into the world. And that is the highest form of prayer.

A Prayer for Children to Use

In God’s loving presence I know I am free. Free to be the divine and loving person I was made to be. I also affirm I am free to pray in many ways. Prayer is my sacred time to connect with the Divine, and I know I can do so with words, music, art, nature, and anything that brings joy to me. I am grateful for the gift of prayer.

A Shared Family Prayer

As we pray, we as a family are grateful and blessed to be who each of us was created to be. We are also grateful for the many ways we can connect with God in prayer. We know that each is a special and loving way to experience Spirit, and we feel joy in doing so.

Together we affirm:
