The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! (Matthew 12:42)

Comment:

The scribes and Pharisees have just, once again, asked Jesus for a definitive sign. He angrily compares them to people in Hebrew Scripture who did not require “signs” in order to believe in a spiritual message. The Ninevites, he says, believed Jonah just by listening to him speak. And Sheba traveled all the way from Africa simply because she had heard of Solomon’s reputation for wisdom. Jesus’ message was more profound and powerful than either Jonah’s or Solomon’s, and yet the scribes and Pharisees were refusing to believe it without proof.

Metaphysically, the scribes and Pharisees represent that part of our own human consciousness that cannot believe without tangible proof. Those doubting thoughts may serve us well in specifically human challenges. But they must not be allowed to control our relationship to the divine. The Christ within us knows without any need of proof the truth of our own divine nature and purpose. When that truth is affirmed, nothing else is needed.

Blessings!
