Tools for Achieving Inner Peace in a Chaotic World
Achieving inner peace is easier said than done. One moment, you’re feeling connected with your innate divinity, and the next, the chaos of the external world has swept you off your feet. This happens to the best of us—especially when times feel unpredictable and unstable. But even in the worst of times, we can always find our stability within.
How exactly do we stay centered? No matter what life throws at you, you always have inner powers that can help you remain at peace. We’ve compiled some tips for how to find your balance when you’re in a pinch. Give yourself five minutes and pick just one of these tips to begin now. Or, select several of these tools to work into your routines.
12 Tools to Practice
- Pause and take a deep breath.
Even if it’s just five seconds, connecting to the breath will help you stay centered.
- Put your hand on your heart and connect.
Feel your heartbeat. Remember, you are human.
- Look up and watch the sky.
What do you feel? What can you imagine?
- Take off your shoes and feel the earth.
Take a few breaths as you do this. Remember that the ground is always holding you up.
- List three things to be grateful for.
Pick up a journal, take five minutes, and put your gratitude into words. Wherever your attention goes, energy grows.
- Reflect on your greatest accomplishments and achievements.
Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Remind yourself of what you know you are capable of. If you’ve done it before, you can do it again.
- Notice what in your life brings you joy.
Give yourself permission to take five minutes and attempt to soak up the joy that is already present in the moment. You are allowed to feel it. Listen for it, acknowledge it.
- Use positive affirmations.
Positive affirmations are a great tool for staying centered. Grab a journal, or just voice some affirmations out loud. This is a great way to remind your mind of your innate divinity.
- Release what doesn’t serve you with eliminations.
Just as we affirm the positive, we can eliminate thoughts and beliefs we have come to regard as false, negative, or limiting. Denials are often partnered with affirmations. Together, they go hand in hand to release false beliefs and make room for truth. Grab a journal and write an elimination next to your affirmations.
- Call a trusted friend.
Nobody can do it alone. Humans are interconnected for a reason. If you’re struggling to stay centered, don’t hesitate to reach out to a loved one. Whether you want advice, or just want to vent, you may be surprised by how much better you’ll feel afterward.
- Call Unity Prayer Ministry.
No matter what, Unity Prayer Ministry (Silent Unity®) is always there to hold space with you. You can make a prayer request online or speak with a prayer associate by phone. All requests are confidential and free of charge.
Meditation is the conscious direction of one’s attention to the inner self. Whether you prefer silence or a guided meditation, take a moment to relax your body and mind as you feel the stillness.
One of the primary teachings of Unity is that each person is born with the natural ability to tap into spiritual powers. We can learn to use each of these powers—like tools from a toolbox—that can support you throughout all of life’s experiences. Each of these tips above are tools that can help you discover your inner power.
Staying Centered, No Matter What
According to Unity cofounder Charles Fillmore, if we are made in the image of God, we must share these divine and creative qualities—at least in potential. Fillmore conceived of the system of 12 innate powers, which he believed we can access at any time: faith, strength, wisdom, love, power, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, release, and life.
As we learn to tap into these powers, we can use them to grow spiritually and experience peace. Establishing a spiritual practice can help with this. In the Unity booklet How to Stay Centered, No Matter What, each of the 12 powers are presented as concrete tools you can use in everyday life.
